. . .Introduction to Sudan and DarfurSudan is located in Africa along the Red Sea. It borders Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central African Republic, South Sudan (beginning 2011, after the Civil War), Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Sudan has had a very long and complex history, but the focus of this site is on the Sudanese region of Darfur (daar - foor). Darfur is located in Western Sudan and is much larger than people often realize. For scale, Darfur is roughly the size of Texas.

REFUGEE EXPERIENCE
The neighboring country of Chad hosts approximately 370,000 Sudanese refugees primarily from Darfur who have fled the violence that began in 2003. While some of these refugees have been displaced for almost two decades, many have come more recently as the violence has flared up over time. The refugee camps that exist in Chad were intended to be temporary almost two decades ago, so they still struggle with limited access to clean water and essential services.
